FREE bathing at Kurokawa Onsen on June 26th! (Outdoor bath Festival)

Once a year, on June 26th, you can bathe outdoor hot spring bath at any of the 24 ryokan belonging to the Kurokawaonsen Ryokan Association for free!

Schedule is as follow:

date: June 26th

time: 10:00 am ~ 3:00 pm

Don’t forget to pop into the reception of the ryokan first before heading off to use the baths!

There are no ATMs or Banks in Kurokawa at the moment.

If you have a “VISA or MASTER” credit card you can use it to get a cash advance (in Japanese we say “cashing”) at Wakaba Ryokan.

Just ask at the reception desk.

There is a charge of 5%, and a limit of 50,000 yen.

A choice of two routes,(A or B) followed by a packed lunch outdoors surrounded by fresh spring greenery !

Date : Sunday May 31st 2015

Starting point : Car park(P1) opposite Nisimura Ryokan.

Meet up time : course A 10:30 a.m. for 11:00 a.m. start

course B 9:30 a.m. for 10:00 a.m.start

Fee : adults 1000 yen children 500 yen (includes a packed lunch and free entrance to one outdoor bath)

Route details :

Route A (Hitotsuyanobori & Seiryunomori) suitable for children and beginners.

Meet at 10:30 am. for 11:00 a.m. departure. Arrive at Shinsuikoen in time to get your packed lunch approx. 1:00 p.m.

(Please note this route is not suitable for pushchairs )

Route B (Seiryunomori special route) A challenging route with some steep sections.

Meet at 9:30 a.m. for 10:00 a.m. departure. Arrive at Shinsuikoen in time to get your packed lunch approx. 1:00 p.m.

After lunch there are some fun activities such as an Onsen hopping pass tossing competition.

The event finishes around 2 p.m. and all participants are free to return to central Kurokawa at there own pace and try out an outdoor bath etc.

Places may be limited so it best to contact the Kurokawaonsen Visitor Center and book a place

There are two public restrooms in Kurokawa Onsen.

Of course you may also pop into any Ryokan and ask to use the restroom!

Setsubun Festival

Setsubun is an early spring festival celebrated in Japan on February 3rd.

On that day we throw roasted soy beans out of the door or windows of the house, shouting “oniwasoto fukuwauchi”.

Oni means demons, so we want to chase away the evil demons and bring good luck into our house.

You may even see some masked characters lurking out side on this day!

Don’t worry, just throw some roasted soy beans (mame) at them.

New English Guide to food and shopping in Kurokawaonsen

We would like to introduce a new and useful English guide to food and shopping in Kurokawaonsen!

It includes a clear, fully illustrated map and details of 21 shops, restaurant and coffee shops in Kurokawa.

Opening times are also included. (But please note these will vary according to the season)

You can pick up a copy at Wakaba Inn, the Visitor Center and the Becchinkan office behind the Visitor Center.

Of course, it’s free!

This is Jizo shrine in the center of Kurokawa.

Look closely, can you see lots of Onsen Hopping tokens?
For good luck you can write a messege on your used Onsen Hopping token and hang it up outside the shrine.

Winter Illuminations in Kurokawa.

From Decmber 19th to February 15th,
you can see special displays of bamboo lanterns in and around Kurokawa.

These lanterns are hand carved in a variety of intricate designs by local people and create a gentle flickering light.

At weekends you can see a full display between 6pm and 9pm, but on weekdays there is a smaller display of lights.

Autumn Leaves

This month is the best time to view autumn foliage in and around Kurokawa onsen.

So take a walk around town, a hike to Seiryu no mori, or just relax and enjoy the views from an outdoor bath. We suggest Oyado Noshiyu near the Visitor Center or Ryokan Sanga (on the edge of town) for leafy autumn scenery.

If you are driving we recommend Kuju Road Park, an 8.8km toll road through Kuju foothills, which are particularly beautiful at this time of year. It is about 15 min. by car from Kurokawa onsen area. And 500 yen per car.
